I was wondering if anyone was taping the Nautica shows later this month. If
so, please e-mail me.
By the way, the Plain Dealer has the opening act as Robert Bradley's

Hi Marsa--
Nobody volunteered to administer the tree, but if you want a copy of
the show, give me a shout and I'll do one for you. It has Copperhead
Road on it.
Take care,

Caught the Radiators last night in Ft. Worth. Towards the end of the
show during a "between songs" jam started on keyboard, Mountain Jam
broke out ... lasted about 3-4 minutes and got a few us in the crowd
whooping and hollering to grins from the band.
Tapers were in evidence ...

`For the record, the Great Speckled Bird was an *underground* newspaper
published in Atlanta in the late 60s, early 70s. It was a period when
mainstream newspapers for the most part ignored or were ignorant of the
burgeoning rock scene (not to mention the Vietnam antiwar movement, the
feminist movement and civil right movement). I can remember seeing copies
of the Bird in California in the early 70s and it was one of the better
street rags. A couple yrs ago, someone posted on this list a mention of an
URL for photos of the original Allman Bros. Band published by the Great
Speckled Bird'
There used to be a terrific `underground' paper out of Vancouver called
the Georgia Straight (in fact, I believe that Sir Bob Geldof wrote for it).
Anyway, I remember a feature on the Allmans after Duane died that had
quotes and exclusive photos. Man, I wish I could read that again. We used
to get it at the library here in town. In this particular article, I think
that either Berry or Dickey was rather `testy' with the writer.
The Straight also featured the misadventures of the great Canuck cartoon
hippie - Harold Hedd.

Hey Bruce,
I didn't respond earlier, because I thought someone
suggested a likely culprit. Could it be Dr. John,
The Night Tripper, by any chance? I think he may
have written the song (would probably be listed as
Mac Rebanek (sp?)) His version is the first I ever
heard, anyway.

Well, I should be more careful when I hit the old reply button. I
didn't see when I replied to Marsa about the Steve Earle show, it was
going to the list...I offered up the show for a tree, nobody took me
up on it, a few folks replied privately, so I figured I could do a
few copies. Since my errant reply to Marsa, however, a few more
folks have replied, and I'm now in over my head....
But...
A true Brother has offered to get the show out to those who want to
hear some Steve Earle in preparation for the ABB shows, which
was my original intention, so stay tuned for further info.
Take care,

There been a few comments here and there about the DEAD
and ABB at the same show. Back in the early 90's (I'm almost
positive it was '91), when the Dead did their traditional summer
stadium tours of the East Coast, the ABB opened for the Dead
at Rich Stadium in Buffalo, NY. A good buddy of mine was at the
show. I remember he had the tape of the Dead's set and they did
a Scarlet->Sugar Mags. I suppose if someone had a Deadbase, they
could check the Buffalo shows with this in the set-list. Of coarse,
I don't think the Bros had a very long set, since they were opening.
Anyone out there attend this one? Have the ABB set on tape?

hours...set 2 is 1.75 hours!
And the sound quality of the Cassette Master to DAT will freak you out!

Daryl,
The Georgia Straight is alive and still going strong in Vancouver. It has
become more main stream but still contains good CD, concert and movie reviews.
There is word of it expanding across Western Canada.
Interesting note, the 'Straight once printed instructions on how to grow pot
(back when it was a true "underground" paper). The editors were brought up on
criminal charges however were found not guilty ( my law school criminal

Peachniks,
I'm pitching in to give Paul a hand on this project. Since
I have B&Ps coming in and going out nearly every day, I'm
limiting this offer to you lucky folks that will be seeing
Steve open for The Brothers and would like a preview before
the shows. If that's you and you'd like to B&P for a copy
of the show please email me directly. High quality trades
will be considered in lieu of B&P, but please don't send
your whole list. A simple recommendation/description will
suffice. If you have any high quality shows by any of the
bands I've offered in the various tape offers I've posted
in the last month, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
I'll provide a B&P offer for this show to the list in general
next month. For the present, the offer is restricted to those
wanting to get a little preview before the shows. Thanks for
cooperating with me on this. And please join me in thanking
Paul for seeding this with his master copy. Folks, that's
rarely done and Paul's generousity should be acknowledged and
appreciated by all.

THE MACON TELEGRAPH
THE GOOD, THE BAD...
THE BROTHERS
FREEMAN OFFERS DEFINITIVE LOOK AT LEGENDARY ALLMAN BROTHERS
Sunday, February 19, 1995
Section: E
Page: 8
By Nick Russo
The Macon Telegraph
It's been almost 26 years since the Allman Brothers Band arrived in
Macon, forever changing the city, as well as the future of American
music.
But for some reason, until now, no one has written a definitive
biography of the band that pioneered Southern rock.
The long wait has finally been rewarded.
Scott Freeman's work is already familiar to many Middle Georgia readers.
He was a reporter at this newspaper from 1983-87 and wrote a sixpart
series on the Allman Brothers Band in 1984.
[ Note: I couldn't find these interviews in the library,
maybe someone else can. If so, I will type the
interviews up - Eliot]
Although the band refused to cooperate with this book, tapes from the
1984 interviews with the four surviving original members, as well as
recent interviews with former band members, roadies, Capricorn Records
employees, exwives, children and dozens of other people in Macon and in
the Allman Brothers organization, provided a wealth of source material.
Reinforced by meticulous research of court and police records, here and
elsewhere, Freeman has produced one of the best books ever written about
any rock band.
The story of the Allman Brothers Band might seem like familiar territory
to a lot of Macon readers, but he manages to break a lot of new ground,
embellishing the story with behind the scenes details and revealing
insights that keep it consistently entertaining.
Beginning with the troubled childhood years of Duane and Gregg Allman,
the book examines their early musical influences, bands and growth as
performers; Duane's emergence as an extraordinary session
guitarist; Phil Walden's involvement, which enabled Duane to assemble
the original band; the legendary Jacksonville jam; and the move to Macon
in April 1969.
At that point, the book takes on an added dimension, of local interest,
as it recounts a significant era in Macon history.
There's so much that many readers will remember or recognize: the
incredible early concerts, when the band began taking music and their
audience to places it had never been before; the Hippie Crash Pad on
College Street; the latenight acoustic jams in Rose Hill Cemetery; Mama
Louise and the H&H the first two studio albums; the Fillmore East
concerts and album, and the rise to national prominence; the Big House;
the triumphant homecoming at the pop festival in Byron; Duane's death;
the new sound, aided by Chuck Leavell; Macon's rise as the mecca of
Southern rock; the death of Berry Oakley, eerily similar to that of
Duane; the Gregg and Cher ``show''; the Scooter Herring trial; the demise
of Capricorn Records; and so much more, up to and including the band's
latest incarnation.
Freeman also takes a brutally candid look at the band's darker side,
with sordid details of excessive substance abuse, violent behavior,
personality clashes, failed marriages, arrests, court cases, the Dixie
Mafia connection and even a murder (of a bar owner by the band's road
manager.)
He pulls no punches, and few of the book's principal characters emerge
unscathed.
Freeman makes the book work on several levels.
As a devoted, longtime fan, he obviously understands the band and its
music, and what made it so original and successful.
As an accomplished slide guitarist, he provides incisive appraisals of
the music itself discussing specific solos, effects, instruments and
other ingredients that made so many Allman Brothers tunes especially
those on the first five albums so powerful. (He analyzes Duane's session
work at Muscle Shoals and with Eric Clapton during the Layla recordings
as well.)
Some readers might not care to know quite this much about who's playing
what licks on particular songs, but others, particularly musicians
and/or Duane fans, will find the details fascinating.
As a former resident of Macon, he's familiar with most of the people,
places and events he's writing about, and puts them in clear, historical
context.
And, as a first rate reporter and writer, he weaves a powerful narrative
that grips the reader and almost refuses to let go. (As he notes, the
Allman Brothers story already had ``all the elements of great drama love
and death and courage and betrayal and survival.'')
And, as a bonus, there's a thorough discography and four page list of
ABB related books and articles to pursue.
To steal a line from Lester Bangs (in a Rolling Stone review of the
first ABB album), Scott Freeman knows what he's writing about, feels it
deeply and communicates it very, very well.
``Midnight Riders'' is essential reading for anyone interested in the
Allman Brothers, or music, or Macon, and it will entertain a lot of
other readers as well.
Nick Russo is news editor of the Macon Telegraph. He first heard the
Allman Brothers Band play at the Macon City Auditorium in 1969.

The RockOnTv site shows The Allman Brothers Band as the

I was out cycling yesterday, listening to I-can't-remember-which-show, and
Hot 'Lanta came on. I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but we're all
friends here, eh? My eyes filled with tears when I thought about what a
moment it's gonna be when the house lights go down and the band cranks that
tune up at the Fox in front of a packed, screaming house in HOT LANTA!!!!!
Now how about someone posts some historical and other info on the Fox like

BTW, Friday, tickets went on sale for John Fogerty (the BEST show I saw last
year was -- most unexpectedly -- John Fogerty, in pretty much a dead heat
with one of the Mule shows I saw)(yeah, I now this is the ABB list and hat
verges on heresy - so stone me! he said, jokingly). There was a driving
rainstorm, and when they held the lottery for that location, I had a 100%
chance of winning it. I got front row, slightly to the side (we'll be taking
our neighbors as our guests, how the hell could we not share out good
fortune), the guy behind me, who'd also seen JF last year, got 2nd row
center. Funny thing was, the two women directly in line behind us spent the
last 15 minutes before on-sale absolutely RAVING about how normal people can
never get decent tickets to ANYthing because of, well, you know...

Tomorrow sees the issue of the W&W-era anthology `MYCOLOGY'. Normally
I would always show my support for the band but they won't be getting
it here. Mixing a 1970 live track with nineties music? What's that all
about? I'd like to know who the brain surgeon was that thought that up!
Surely there must be an outtake from the `EVENING WITH' sets that they
could have tacked onto the disc, `One Way Out' comes to mind. Or even
better, a `High Falls' from Beacon '97. Now *that* I could dig.
Strange...don't you think? The last thing I would want is to buy the
disc for the Atlanta Pop cut only to see the entire 1970 gig get issued
down the road.
Nice title, though. :-)

I recently recieved a splendid master analog of
GA&F 2/17/98 at the Crest Theater Sacramento.
I came to me on 2 nineties. The second tape has only the last
three songs of the GA&F show- the rest is fill.
I have some options here I'm and I'm looking for input
on this oh-so-serious dilemma.
Here' the five options as I see it:
1) I chopped out just about all of applause between the last number and
the encore [there was ALOT] so the show WILL FIT on a 100-
EXCEPT with These Days getting cut
at the end of the A side and resuming on the B side.
2) Or If I restart These Days on B form the beginning -
[letting that precious few minutes go to waste on the end of side A]
then the last minute of Statesboro Blues gets cut off !!
3) OR it would fit comfortably on a 110.
But I've heard negative views on extra long tapes...?
4) Or it could be on two 60's [?] Can one obtain good 60's easily?
5) Or just leave it as is with only the last three songs on the second ninety
and the remaining 70ish% fill.
So, taper afficianados- how would you call it??
Inquiring shitheads want to know!
Thanks-

Now normally, I don't buy "greatest hits" CDs, or even anthologies of
a band I really like, because I already have everything they've put
out. That applies with all but one song on Mycology, that exception
being the Atl. Pop cut.
In this case, though, I'm breaking with tradition. I ordered the CD,
but doubt I'll ever listen to it. I may dub the Atl. Pop cut (Every
hungry woman?) as filler on several of my ABB tapes, but I won't
listen to the CD.
"SO, Pat....whay the hell are you buying then?", someone so astutely
asks.
Because I look at my tape collection, and I see some spectacular
music...music that affects my life, gives me extreme joy and
happiness...and I realize that the boys that make this music didn't
get a damn dime from any of it. Because of their generosity, I have
incredible music from '69 through the recent Beacon run, at no
benifit to the Brothers.
The least I can do is shell out $15 for their CD. I'll probably end
up dubbing the ATl. Pop tune and donating the disc to the library,
like I did with the other Greatest Hits CD with the denim like cover.
Regards,
Pat

Denise,
In my view, unless you are 100% sure you are never going to make
copies of something in your collection for others it is of the
highest importance to maintain the integrity of whatever material
you acquire. Once you chop stuff, everyone after you gets the chop.
If it's strictly for your personal enjoyment, do whatever feels
right (though your heirs may curse your short-sightedness some day
if you compromise your legacy).
This means, in short, that of the five possible solutions you posed
only the above two do nothing to change the show. It's bothersome
to have the tail end of a show on a second tape, so your best bet is
using a 110.
110's (actually, anything longer than a 90) had a bad rep at one time
(it was alledged that the tape stock used was thinner, easier to get
caught up in your deck, etc) but that problem seems to have been re-
solved. Most Dead tapers I know routinely used TDK 110's for the 2nd
sets (and many used them for first sets, too-- I'm trying to stifle
the urge to make a crack about 55 min first sets here and not having
much success), and I've never heard of a problem with them.
I greatly prefer Maxell to TDK, but the only Maxell XLII 110's I ever
bought were pretty crappy. At least 4 or 5 of the 8 I bought were
defective. They might not even make them anymore (Maxell 110's, that
is) for all I know. If they don't make them, of course, you shouldn't
use them.
So, in conclusion, go with the 110. Using 60's might do the trick, but
you'll forever be dealing with people sending you 90's for a copy. Go
with the 110 and they'll be forced to cooperate to get the whole show.

THE MACON TELEGRAPH
QUITE A RIDE
Sunday, February 19, 1995
Section: E
Page: 1
By Dan Maley
The Macon Telegraph
For Scott Freeman the rock music fan, a 1984 meeting with Allman
Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts was a brush with greatness.
For Scott Freeman the journalist, it was a valuable face to face encounter
with one of rock's most elusive characters and a seed of insight that
would grow into a book a decade later.
At the time, Freeman was a reporter for The Macon Telegraph. He was
working on a series of stories on the band, then on indefinite hiatus.
He and photographer William Berry had driven to Bradenton, Fla., for an
interview with Betts, the writer and singer of the Allman Brothers' 1973
hit, ``Ramblin' Man.''
During the interview, something happened that Freeman will never forget.
Betts let Freeman, an amateur guitarist, play his Les Paul electric
guitar. The future member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame showed
Freeman how to play ``In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,'' his own jazzy
composition and one of the Allman Brothers' signature songs.
``It's odd,'' Freeman said recently. ``When you have great experiences
that are burned in your memory, you usually don't have a photographer
there.''
Freeman tape-recorded his interview with Betts in 1984, as he did
interviews with the other three surviving original members of the Allman
Brothers; singer/keyboardist Gregg Allman, drummer Jaimoe Johnson and
drummer Butch Trucks. Those tapes came in handy again in 1992, when
Freeman began work on his first book.
``Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band'' appeared in
bookstores across the country last week. Freeman's publisher, Little,
Brown & Company, has lots of experience selling books on celebrities: It
also published O.J. Simpson's recent best seller, ``I Want to Tell
You.''
---Doors were shut
By the time Freeman set out to write his book, he discovered that doors
that had been open in 1984 had been shut tight since. The band, which
reunited in 1989, refused to cooperate on Freeman's terms and even
distributed a letter urging potential sources not to talk to him.
Still, Freeman found sources. In addition to people who had been
associated with the band, he found magazine articles, newspaper stories,
police records and album liner notes. Court records alone provided a
wealth of information Freeman read thousands of pages relating to dozens
of bankruptcy, divorce and criminal cases.
``They were certainly a very litigious group,'' he said.
And he still had those tapes from 1984.
The result is 343 pages that flesh out one of the most dramatic stories
in rock 'n' roll, the outline of which is known to anybody who has
played air guitar and/or lived in Macon.
There's the fairhaired brothers, Duane and Gregg Allman, who grew up in
Nashville and Daytona Beach and discovered the blues while hanging out
on the wrong side of the tracks. There's Phil Walden, Otis Redding's
former manager, who sought out Duane Allman after hearing him play
guitar on a Wilson Pickett record. Walden encouraged Allman to form a
band, which moved to Macon in 1969 and became the foundation of Capricorn
Records.
There's the triumph of ``At Fillmore East,'' the live 1971 album that
was a break through for the band, followed by the tragedy of Duane
Allman's death in a motorcycle wreck later that year. After bass player
Berry Oakley died in eerily similar circumstances a year later, there
seemed no hope for the Allman Brothers Band to continue. Yet with new
personnel the band bounced back higher than anyone expected, selling
more records and playing to bigger crowds than ever before.
There's Gregg Allman's unlikely entry into the celebrity spotlight via
his marriage to Cher and his embarrassing role in a 1976 drug trial.
There's failed albums, acrimonious breakups and the band's recent
resurgence.
Add groupies, murder, Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign, Eric
Clapton, the ``Dixie Mafia'' and even more drugs, and you've got a story
capable of engrossing even readers with only a casual interest in the
band. The sheer number of references to Macon people and places is
enough to fuel local dinner conversations for months.
--- Only the second Allman book
Despite the compelling elements of the Allman Brothers' story, Freeman's
is only the second book on the band, according to his bibliography. The
first was a 1976 publication that Freeman described as a coffeetable
picture book.
Perhaps others were daunted by the band's distrust of journalists,
which, according to ``Midnight Riders,'' dates back at least to 1971,
when Rolling Stone magazine published an unflattering profile of the
band as a bunch of cocaine snorting hicks, including it in the same issue
as its obituary for Duane Allman.
The official response of the Allman Brothers Band to Freeman's book is
``no comment,'' according to Bert Holman, who has been manager of the
band since 1991. Still, Holman elaborated somewhat.
``The book was not written with our input, cooperation or
verification,'' said Holman, who had not read ``Midnight Riders.''
``He came to us and said, `I want you to tell me everything. I want you
to give me access to your lives, and I'm not going toshow you what I
write and I'm not going to let you participate economically.' ''
``We wanted editorial approval and to participate economically,'' Holman
said. ``If someone's going to put out one of our records, we want to
take part economically and have some artistic control. ... It's not so
much sour grapes, it's business and it's our life story. We said, `What
are you offering us?' He said, `Nothing.' We threw up our hands.''
Holman questioned the worth of a book that seemed to dwell on the drug
use and checkered love lives of the band members, especially considering
the feelings of their families. He also doubted the reliability of
Freeman's sources and resented the tendency of writers to dwell on the
Allman Brothers' past, ignoring the ``impact and validity'' of the
current version of the band.

Morning all...
Just wondering... does anyone know if there is a complete version of the Mountain Jam from 12/31/70
out there? The version I have is cut about 10 minutes in, but up until then is really cool. Anyway I
was quite surprised at that review of Midnight Riders (I know there's more to come but...) 'coz I
thought Scott Freeman said some pretty nice things about the (then recent) incarnation of the band.
I'm surprised he didn't say more bad stuff about the band given how little help they gave him. Talk
about labour of love... Well I know some folks don't like the book and it's not all peaches and
cream etc. but it kinda gets you interested.
Anyway Jules' cool album of the week suggestion is Miles Davis "In A Silent Way" - they get a nice
groove going :-)
bye!

Thanks for the thoughts. Les Brers is definitely a possibility. It is one
of my favorite jam songs and we have talked about bringing it back. You
must undersatnd that
Mountain Jam is not a song. It is a jam that developed over 100's of gigs
and afternoon jams and was unique to that group. If we were to do another
one now it
really wouldn't be the same at all. We are starting to develop a few things
on Jessie and High Falls that may turn into a MJ type of extension. We'll
just have to wait
and see.

Wow! I can just imagine Oteil getting into that bass grove on Les Bres
right now. I think everybody knows what part I am refering to... right
after the drum and guitar intro... right as it kicks into the song out of
the 10 minute intro...
Last night I was listening to the 3/7/98 Liz Reed drum/Bass solo on my
headphones and it was amazing. These are the high quality full-ear sony
headphones so you can hear every note. This guy just blows me away
everytime I hear him. I was trying to figure out this one riff he was
playing and there was one note that escaped me (I am a pretty good bass
player and I also have a knack for transcribing songs). After about 15
minutes I figured out it was an chord that was played so perfectly it
sounded like a single note. I think it was Bass Player mag. that
compared him to a young Jaco. That pretty much sums it up. I loved the
brothers music before Oteil and Jack joined but they have really added
something special to the mix. Nothing against Warren & Woody, Mule is
also one of my favorite bands... Am I just rambling on now? or does
anybody know what I am taking about?

Well I think I will have a setlist completed by next monday. It is finals
week so I am swamped until thursday. Most requests seem to from 3/7 or
3/14.... Aren't there any other shows that people want to see included....
I think I am going to put in the acoustic set that included Hideaway since
that was a special/rare moment. Also, the acoustic Liz Reed, wich I am
yet to hear....
Do we want this to be 1 or 2 CD legnths?
Also, on the DAT vs Tape master topic... I am going to try to get all of
the songs on DAT and make the master CD off of DAT to make the DATHeads
happy. Personaly I can't tell the difference with a live show, BUT
obviously other people can. If I can manage to get all the shows on DAT
it will be a totally digital CD, if not I might have to mix in a few
analog songs. I have some processing software that eliminates the tape
hiss when transfering to CD so tapes will sound great anyway. This
software also cleans up LP's when transfered to CD. It completely removes
any of the static, hissing, and pops that "pop" up on some LPs. I'v
transfered some old Jazz 45's that are out of print onto CD and it sounds
line something that Blue Note just re-issued... :)

A while back I read the late Ray Coleman's bio of Phil Collins. Apparently
Phil became quite friendly with Eric Clapton during the late '70's and
early '80's. Anyway, one day when Phil was visiting Slowhand, the guitarist
made the drummer/vocalist sit down and listen to all of `LAYLA' while Eric
delivered a passionate, drunken dissertation on the seminal work.
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall at that listening session! BTW, Phil's
Big Band is at Nautica the night before the Brothers arrive. Sure would like
to see Collins on `True Gravity'. :-)

O.K. ladies and gentlemen, let's settle this once and for all. I have a confession to make. I am a closet TDK fan. I have never admitted this to the taping community before for fear of being ostracized. Can anyone tell me why Maxells are so predominantl
y used. To be honest with my eyes closed I dont' think I could tell a show taped on an XLII from the same show taped on a TDK SA. I always just found TDK's to last slightly longer. So what's your opinion. Why do you prefer one brand over the other or do
you not have a preference. Let's get this out in the open and maybe we can all learn something about analog recording medium.

I have found Maxells to be more durable---TDK are eaten by my decks the way a

So it could be a matter of decks --I dunno----although I remember Prof. Glenn

caused the least amount of hiss when copying a tape.

Just an interesting thought I'd like to share with y'all. This morning
while working on some modifications to some old boring warehouse software
here at good ole GC&SU, I decided that some good music would make the chore
a lot more palatable. So, I popped in 2nd Set and advanced over to the last
song on the CD, 'Jessica'. As the music began, it quickly became apparent
that I could either listen to the music, or concentrate on work, doing both
was totally out of the question. Of course I chose to push back from the
keyboard and enjoy the magic. For the next sixteen minutes, the state of
Georgia definitely didn't get their moneys worth. I should have known (
having experienced this before) that I can't casually listen to theABB or
Mule. Jessica is a prime example (and there are others) where the music
grabs my attention right away and takes me on a journey that never totally
strays from the central melody of the song, although taking some very
interesting side trips. I can listen to the radio or other CDs while
working and casually enjoy them in the background, but not this. This is
special music enjoyed by folks who really appreciate the finer things.
Anyway, enough with the gushing... Hope to meet and greet a bunch of y'all
in Atlanta in september... David (wishing he could party with Ron and

To my ear, Oteil and Jack are phenomenal musicians. Oteil has gone right to
the top rung of my list of favorite electric bass players. I struggle to
think of others I like more. Jaco, Victor Bailey was phenomenal with
Zawinul Syndicate, I love Victor Wooten, but I love Oteil's playing
more-it's more lyrical. Oteil is also one of the most supportive without
being overwhelming bass players I've ever heard and support is the name of
the game for a bass player. The names I start thinking of to compare Oteil
to are among the generally acknowledged finest electric players out there.
That's tall company. I never felt that way about Allan. I don't mean any
disrespect to him. Saying that Steve Kerr is not Scottie Pippen doesn't
mean Steve Kerr still isn't a damn good basketball player, he just isn't
quite at Pippen's level.
I don't think of Jack as so clearly "better" as a player compared to
Warren, but I like him more.
Overall they've changed the sound of the band dramatically. It's more
sophisticated and interactive. Sometimes I think Dickey isn't playing
quite as hot now as he did a few years ago, but then I hear him rip one and
forget about what used to be.
Peace,
Mike

<< O.K. ladies and gentlemen, let's settle this once and for all. I have a

think I could tell a show taped on an XLII from the same show taped on a TDK

Why do you prefer one brand over the other or do you not have a preference.
Let's get this out in the open and maybe we can all learn something about
analog recording medium. >>
I have a friend who is a materials engineer and used to work with BASF. I
asked him what he thought of the two tapes and he said that the actual Iron
Acetate combo is exactly the same. A recording on the two brands SHOULD sound
exactly the same if made under EXACTLY the same conditions. The only thing he
noticed was that the backing of the Maxell tape was more durable.
This was a comparison of the SA versus the XL II. He also added that the
XLIIS was EXACTLY the same kinda tape that goes into the XL II. The only
difference was that the casing was much better for the XLIIS. Also, he noted
that the heavier casing could dampen vibration within the tape well leading to
a slightly better recording.
One other note...he mentioned that if you are taping off of a CD or DAT, the
metal tapes are the only ones that are going to capture the full dynamic
range. The top end for a SA or XL II or XL IIS tape is about 18,000 hz. The
top end of a metal tape is 22,000 hz. There are CD's that can go up to 30,000
hz and cd players that can read those. Very few commercial speakers, however,
can play above 25,000 hz. Some headphones can go up to 30,000 hz though.
Considering that the normal range of hearing in a human is 20-20000 hz, it
doesn't really matter.
One other thing...he mentioned that the dynamic range of FM radio was much
more limited then that of a recording. Putting an FM broadcast on CD is kinda
silly for the sake of YOUR recording. The top end of FM (due to the physics
of the wave) is 18,000 hz. That;s why it sounds "compressed," for lack of a
better word.
The only thing that I can say about CD's is there is no tape flip. If you
spin it for someone else onto tape, there will be that hiss that comes with
analog tape (not much for a 1st gen recording though). Also, you can listen
to it on your computer, I suppose or if that's all ya got in the car (a CD
player that is).
Finally, in regards to the 110 debate. The maxell 110 of choice is the
MX-110. They aren't sold very much for some reason. I've never seen one in a
store. You can find the TDK MA-110 in stores however. Terrapin does offer
the MX-110 if you are a die-hard Maxell fan and don't wanna use TDK's.
Anyway...that is the info I have been able to gather,
Dave

like lunchtime shoppers like me, and a few more obvious touristas and
retirees.
But there's a SHITLOAD of people it looks like who DON'T WORK. At least
they don't work the good 'ol 9-5. Now, I haven't had more than an 11 or
13 day long break from 'work' since a 3 week vacation about 1980 (I
painted my HOUSE then), an I guess I'm a victim of the 'American Ruse' -
or simply the
work ethic planted deep in my skull by my parents upon birth. But dang
it,
I can't help but feel kind of... oh hell I don't know - I'm whining now,
aren't I...
Anyway - I picked up a couple copies of MYCOLOGY at BEST BUY (12.99)
- a couple cuz I think this kind of compilation is great to pass around
to family and friends - and FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD, this is an official
release of a
Duane era tune, so IM gonna have it! Hey - a few of y'all out there
might
just fess up that your inital ABB purchase was Decade of Hits, before we
go off slammin' the release of an Anthology. They have their
porpoise...
And looky here! In the inside cover is a hearty endorsement of OUR web
site!
And the Queen (no, not YOU Jon) and Rowland!! Thats awfully nice to
see.
Once again - I would like to thank them for all of their efforts
expended on behalf of US. I know its a labor of love - but it's still a
labor. Thankfully it
can be recognized in a very fitting manner now. AMEN
MYCOLOGY DOES sharpen my appetite for a release by the CURRENT
band - I want it - I want it ASAP - I want it done up RIGHT, too,
dammit!
Personally, I'm tickled at ANY
release by the family - and I can't argue with the selections made for
this
compilation - its some GREAT music! Which gets me on to a cutesy little
observation I'd like to make as an addendum to the "'other things I hear
when I'm listening to so-n-so track" thread(s). <===which I love to
death
Here it is - anybody notice how your BRAIN automatically begins to
'play' the
next track in order from THE ORIGINAL RECORDING when you finish up
hearing track A ??? That is to say - after Get On With Your Life
finished up
on the box here from Mycology (Track 4) - My head starts
playing/expecting the greasy intro to Midnight Man - and I suffer a
slight freak when Nobody Knows crashes in instead! I think this was one
thing that really threw me
off with the Fillmore Concerts release --- the Stevelator-2000 mental
CD player-arranger was thrown into complete discombobulation by the
rearrangment of tracks. I YAM a creature of habits... (which reminds
me, isn't it about time for a beer?). Anybody else suffer from this
peculiar 'irregularity'??
Every Hungry Woman - admittedly NOT my favorite early ABB piece - sounds
really really good - Berry is held pretty well in check in this mix, but
the
effect overall is very pleasing. They even manage to blend some nice
blown speaker whistling in an unobtrusive manner! And its placement as
the
final cut on Mycology enables the final audible on the CD to be Duane
bidding
us all "thank you" !
Well you're sure as hell welcome, bud. I'll go out and see YOUR band
again
real soon! If I can get a day offa work...

I did manage to look through this "coffeetable book". I got it through
Interlibrary Loan at the library I work for. The book has some nice

Peachniks,
While I agree that the Max Points promotion probably solidified
Maxell's share of the tape trader market, I think it is possible
to discern a trend towards Maxell dominance even earlier. The
Max Points offer just took the trend to a whole new level. (BTW,
if the person who was able to get Maxell to send him some blanks
by pointing out that TDK had recently run a promotion using the
Max Points is reading this, please contact me)
My personal preference for Maxell is, now, irrational. When I
started collecting tapes, 90 min XLIIS tapes were $1.99 and the
heavier case construction seemed well worth the extra .30 over
the price of a plain XLII. When you fast forwarded a XLIIS it
seemed there was noticeably less chatter compared to the XLII.
I'm no science guy, obviously, but it seemed to me that a heavier
case would translate into less chance of the tape unduly wiggling
around inside while recording.
I say irrational because I can no longer afford XLIIS tapes and
even though the Max Points program is over and even though I've
read the test results in Consumer Reports showing some (marginal?)
superiority of TDK over Maxell, I still buy Maxell. Unless I'm
desperately strapped for cash, I'd rather pay $1.67 for a Maxell
XLII than $1.50 for a TDK.
Then again, maybe it's not irrational. Maybe there's some sense
in making a choice and sticking with it in your collection. It
could be TDK or Maxell or whatever, but using the same brand
over time, in some way, might allow you to develop a feeling for
what to expect from the product. It's possibly the case that
each brand has certain characteristics that, while not being
necessarily quantifiable or even identifiable, are more or less
consistent over time. If so, and you use enough of them, you
might sort of develop a sense of what to expect from a brand.
Like I said, I'm no science guy.
Still, all said, I'm absolutely positive I couldn't tell the
difference in a blind product to product comparison. *shrug*

let me weigh in on this one
A) never had a tdk eaten by a tade deck (sorry tony, i have had a number
of maxell's go that route)
B) to a large degree i think force of habit from max points figures into
it
C) i have been told, but am not an engineer and cant verify, that tdk
holds the upper end better
D) if you are trading sax/xliis the i would guess the shell may make the
xliis a slightly better tape
E) i prefer to trade tdk but have little opportunity to do so as they
arent readily available where i am
hope everyone is well

I am a less avid tap trader than many of you, but I have always preferred
TDK to Maxell. I have always felt-- and believe me, I know there may be
nothing at all to this-- that TDK is better for highs, Maxell for lows. And
my preference for TDK is simply a matter of which end of the sonic spectrum
makes my ears happiest.

Wow, lots of good ideas flowing on this topic! In response to Mike, I'd go
for 2 CDs for a Best of the Beacon. If a radio show couldn't get less than
2 discs worth of material I doubt a bunch of avid fans can.
Also, I think becca's idea of a compilation of acoustic Beacon material
(in whatever medium - CD or tape) would be cool too. I guess there's a lot
you can do when your fav. band plays a three week stand :)

I would venture most adults cannot hear 20,000 - it's not so much the
average but rather the max. for a human (and probably one that hasn't
played loud music for years & years). Oh, and CD's only go to 22,050 - by
definition (half the 44,100 sampling rate).
When you consider that alot of vintage shows (60's, 70's) taken from
audience tapes probably have upper end freq's around 6 Khz, it's really way
overkill to pick and choose the "best" audio tape, anyone will do fine to
reproduce crummy sounding (the sonics, not the performance) shows.

Hi Folks,
Just a note to say thanks to a great guy, Kevin Zimka.
I was working in my office today when my wife came downstairs and said "you
got a package in the mail."
Imagine my surprise when I opened it up and found 5 tapes in side, The
Beacon '98, Manley Fieldhouse 7/72, and The Warehouse 9/71. Also included
was a simple note reading "hope this helps." Amazing!!
As many of you know I have recently faced up to some problems in my life
that needed dealing with. I am now one month drug free and, thanks in no
small part to the support I've recieved from so many of you, I will remain
so. But this takes the cake.
Thank you Kevin, you are a most excellent dude and a generous, caring man.
My day, week, month and so on were made by your wonderful gesture of
kindness.
Ladies and gentlemen, please send Kevin a smile, he is a brother of the

Seems like I remember reading that a cymbal splash is around 13,000 hz.
Probably the highest pitch you are likely to find in music. The reason for
going above 20,000 hz is a theory that you can sense the sound. There are
cd's that go above 22,050. I can not remember the name of the technology, but
they have a special symbol on the disc itself. The cd players to play them
cost about $3000. When I was looking at new tape decks last year, the place I
got my Yamaha's had em. I listened to them with headphones that went above
30,000 hz and couldn't tell a difference.
It's funny...I have Surrealistic Pillow on vinyl. When I play "Embryonic
Journey" on the record, it sounds more....THERE. I don't know how to explain
it other then that. I borrowed the cd and played it on the same stereo and it
wasn't the same. Of course, the snaps and pops weren't there...but the vinyl
seemed to have more volume. And by that, I mean more space...not louder.

(from the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, Tuesday, June 9, 1998)
CDwho? Net retailer tries to build a brand name
JENKINTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- Haven't heard of CDnow? Just wait.
Its blue-and-white logo is popping up all over the World Wide Web, as the
online music retailer races to establish its brand name and stave off
competition from better-known foes.
At Internet directories Yahoo, Lycos and WebCrawler, cdnow.com is just a
click away. At entertainment sites Mr. Showbiz, Wall of Sound and the
Rolling Stone Network, readers are urged to become CDnow customers.
Television is the next frontier. CDnow, based in suburban Philadelphia,
recently agreed to a $22.5 million sponsorship deal with MTV Networks, the
division of Viacom Inc. that owns cable music stations MTV and VH1.
``We're building a brand,'' said founder Jason Olim, 28. ``I see (music
sales) probably as being a three-brand game.''
Which three will prevail remains to be seen.
Less than 1 percent of recorded music sales occur over the Internet,
divided among hundreds of retailers, from mass marketers to record labels
to local skateboard shops.
CDnow led the market last year with 33 percent of online music sales, twice
the share of No. 2 Music Boulevard, according to New York research firm
Jupiter Communications.
But well-known rivals are crowding the field. Tower Records and mail-order
merchants K-Tel and Columbia House have moved onto the Web. Blockbuster and
booksellers Borders and Amazon.com also offer music at their sites.
Olim isn't worried. ``I'm looking at the fact that 99 percent of retail
sales are not taking place on the Internet,'' he said.
That figure will shrink. Jupiter predicts online music sales will reach
$1.6 billion annually within four years. And today's Web marketing battles
will determine which retailers survive to cash in, Jupiter analyst Ken
Cassar said.
``Everyone is losing money because the margins are so low. What people are
shooting for is an established market share by 2002,'' he said. ``It is
important that you be No. 1, No. 2 or maybe No. 3.''
To make themselves known, CDnow and other online retailers have allied with
portals -- the search engines and Internet services such as America Online
where most Web surfers start their ride.
The strategy is necessary, Cassar said, because CDnow and many of its
competitors offer pretty much the same wide selection.
CDnow made its first deal with Yahoo, paying for the right to stick its
button alongside the Web's most popular directory.
That was in August. Since then, ``the portals have effectively been locked
up for the next two to four years by the big players,'' Cassar said.
He anticipates that online retailers will begin to shift more dollars to
traditional advertising, such as CDnow's MTV deal and its spots on Howard
Stern's radio show.
CDnow also offers ``cosmic credit'' to enlist average folks in its
marketing army. Similar to programs offered by Amazon and Borders, cosmic
credit rewards people who link their Web pages to CDnow's with a slice of
the revenue generated by the link. So far, 18,000 have joined up.
``You build the name, you build the brand, then you make the money,'' said
Lauren Shanahan, spokeswoman for the Association of Internet Professionals.
``This is a traditional retailing concept.''
Olim was a Brown University graduate and software engineer when he launched
CDnow four years ago with his twin brother, Matthew.
Inspiration dawned in college, after he received a copy of Miles Davis'
``Kind of Blue.'' When he went to a record store seeking more of the same,
the teen-age clerk pointed him to section ``M.''
``What I wanted was a better music store,'' Olim said. ``I thought what
would work is a database that would take the information in review guides
and put it together with the records.''
Starting with $20,000, the Olim brothers spent six months ``coding like
madmen'' before they were ready in August 1994.
The Olims launched a dial-up site and netted $14 the first month. A friend
then told Olim that he should think about going on the then-nascent Web.
``He said, `It's going to be huge,''' Olim recalled. ``I said, `Well,
maybe.' At no point did I imagine it would be this big.''
CDnow's revenues grew to $17.4 million in 1997, and $10 million in the
first quarter of 1998, Cassar said. The company has tripled its staff in a
year, to more than 130. While CDnow lost more than $10 million last year,
it benefited from Wall Street's enthusiasm for Internet
stocks earlier this year. The company began trading its shares on Nasdaq
exchange in February and raised $61 million in cash, which it has been
spending on the new promotions.
CDnow.com can be read in nine languages and boasts 250,000 titles but no
inventory. When an order is placed, CDnow has it sent out by a distributor.
Compact discs run a few dollars below list, plus shipping.
Unlike N2K's Music Boulevard, CDnow produces little of its own content.
CDnow has a four-year deal with College Media Inc. to allow customers to
access record reviews from the CMJ music monthlies. Under the three-year
deal with MTV, CDnow will sponsor MTV and VH1 telecasts while offering
reviews and music news from the networks at its Web site.
``You won't find us trying to build a magazine,'' Olim said. ``We're not
going to try to waste our time trying to compete with our partners.''

I don't know much about TDK, and I'm not a sound engineer, and I can't tell
the difference between hertz a little and hertz a lot, too many years in front
rows I guess, but..... I was trying to spin a tape for someone yesterday from
a full Maxell XLII 90 onto a Sony HF90 that I ended up with somehow and the
Sony tape ran out about 10-15 seconds before the Maxell ended....now THAT
sucked. Round filing the Sony and sticking to Maxell here.....

I'm assuming that this is Tom Nolan's 1975 softcover book on the

do see it. In the book it is mentioned that the Allmans played `My

that the `Eric only plays acoustic on `Layla'' vibe started.

Hi all-
For any of you who are 100%, true blue, died-in-the-wool diehard Dickey
Betts fanatics, I have an offer for you:
ABB 8/31/73 unknown venue, Atlanta, GA
Betts et al, 4/14/96 R'n'R HOF, Cleveland OH (acoustic)
Both are very good, low gen AUD copies. The HOF show is with Warren &
Alle(& a very good Ramblin' Man); in the 8/31 the mix is a little off
because it was recorded right
in front of Dickey's amp! So though you hear the rest of the band, Betts'
playing is predominant. I'll spin 'em for ya if yer into it. Drop me a
line and I'll take as many as I feel I can handle.

"Robert (Bob) McCann"
Just checked Amazon Books for the ABB book by Nolan. They have it listed;
but it is no longer in print and not currently available. However, if you
want a copy you can still place an order for it and they say they will
check their network of used book dealers for a copy and get back to you
within two weeks and let you know what they have found.
BTW, the hardcover version of Midnight Riders is also out-of-print and not
currently available. They do have the paperback version available.
Someone mentioned Victor Wooten the other day (I forget who it was) and
that reminded me that my neighbor (plays bass in a gospel group) and I had
been discussing bass players and he had mentioned this same player and told
me that he had a video tape of him playing and demonstrating playing
techniques. So I went across the street last night and borrowed the tape
and watched it. I have to admit I was not familiar with this guy at all;
but he is awesome. Who does he play with? What's his background?
I will be changing jobs here at the university around the first of the
month (don't know where I'm going to wind up, but the university has to
find me another position since they are abolishing my current one and I've
got 19 years in here), so I'll be losing this email address. I'm sure that
I'll get a new one, but am not at all sure about how relaxed the work
environment will be as far as allowing me to continue subscribing to this
list. Or even if I'll have my own terminal or will have to share one. If I
do have to drop off the list I hope that some of you will still stay in
contact either via regular mail or phone and keep me in the tape pipeline.
I've got three interviews scheduled (two tomorrow; both in the main library
on campus, one in circulation, the other in reference; and then for another
position in circulation next Monday). Any good vibes will be greatly
appreciated. I'll let you know what happens.
As some of you already know, due to this job change situation I've had to
cancel my plans to be at the ABB's July 4th concert in Charlotte and the
party at Ron's. Wish I could be with you all, but the situation here
dictates otherwise.
It looks like I'll be spending my Fourth of July holiday making sure no
neighborhood fool sets my yard or house on fire with any errant fireworks
(it's so dry around here that there are no fires being allowed in any of
the area parks or camping facilities.
We've been experiencing a smoky haze for several days now as a result of a
fire that started back on Memorial Day in the nearby Apalachacola National
Forest and is still burning and has gotten to within twenty miles of town.
Never thought I'd say this, but we could sure use some rain and there isn't
any in the forecast through the rest of this week.
Finally got my new blinds installed in the living room of my new home last
Friday and my stereo hooked up over the weekend. Last night I got started
on the taping commitments that sort of got back-logged during my moving
process. So for the four of you (you know who you are), a little more
patience; the dubbing is finally underway.
On the Maxell vs. TDK topic......one problem I've encountered is that
sometimes 90 on one doesn't equal 90 on the other when dubbing; in other
words, what I'm trying to express is that I've occasionally had a tape run
out before I was finished dubbing to it. Both were 90 min tapes; just
different brands. On my old deck I had some problems with TDK tapes getting
eaten; but since I've upgraded my decks I haven't had any problems with
that. As far as sound quality goes, I've experimented dubbing a show onto
both brand new TDK & Maxell tapes and I can't tell any difference.
Peace.....

Bob,
I mentioned Victor Wooten when talking about Oteil. Victor is the bass
player in Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He's one of the people who's often
talked about in Bass Player magazine. He does a lot of two hand tapping
stuff as well as regular bass. He gets lots of feature space with Bela. He
also has his own album out, but I've heard reports of it's lameness.
Victor's brother, Future Man, plays synthdrums with Bela. He plays a
guitarsynth called a Synth Axe triggering drum sound/samples. It's a
pretty wild setup, but it sounds good musically. Bela is the baddest banjo
player I know. He has revolutionized the instrument and stretched the
possibilities of the instrument far beyond what I'd heard before him.(his
pal Tony Trishka is pretty awesome, too, on banjo)
They're well worth checking out. The overall sound is fusiony in a good
way.....
Peace,
Mike

Hey, y'all,
couple things (other than what a GLORIOUS day to be an Allman Brothers fan!)
1) Charlotte 7/4: I'd like to get a preliminary count on who MIGHT show up
at the ol' homestead for the very low-key (I'm a different person in
Charlotte than in NYC, Hot 'Lanta, or Denver, or heck, even Raleigh-wood)
pre-show on the 4th.
Sooo...anyone who may happen to be in our neck of the woods 'round that
time, let me know, eh, so I can start figuring party supplies (& maybe a
door prize or two, nothing bigger than a tape), send out some "how to get
here" and "what to bring" (nothing required, anything graciously regarded)
emails and such. Plus, if anyone would be in Friday afternoon or evening,
there may be a thing or two that can be done in conjunction with he visit
("Everest" at our local IMAX, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin at the World
Famous Double Door on 7/3, that sort of thing). No hurry, and no need for
replies from
The Blantons + 2
Chris H + 1
Chris Sheppard + 3
My left-coast pager benefactress
RLH
and M Jones,
'cause I alreday have y'all down. (WHO'M I most ungraciously, pig dat I am,
fergettin'?)
Skaidawg, you comin'?
Doug, Gerry, and Mike: y'all locals, expect to hear from you soon,OK?
2) The Fox. We 'uns from outside Hot Lanta need some guidance on hotel
plans. (I MAY already be set, but even so, many of us probably need some
guidance.) Sounds like some of the younger, wilder fans'll be staying at the
Days Inn and such? Any thoughts for us slightly more sedate (I'm referring
to my lovely wife,of course) folk? Also, any websites on the history of etc,
the Fox a la the Beacon? AND, who's gonna make a list of which 'uns of us
are a comin' and where we'll all be a sittin'?
Eatin' an anticipatory peach (that I always thought would be
ever-so-slightly better than the real thing until a magical weekend about
three months ago) as the "Alllmans tour o' Historical Venues"* continues
unabated,
ron e.

Are you talking other than the original Jimi Hendrix song, or rather how
the ABB has come to use it in jams. The first I heard it was in an ABB
context was in 94 during Jessica. The band used this song for its drum
solo and coming out of the drums Dickey would blend in to 3rd Stone for
awhile the back into Jessica.
BTW, Stevie Ray Vaughn would do a killer 3rd Stone as a set closer in
his early club days. Great feedback ,neck bending, etc.

Howdy gals and bros,
Thanks again to all of you who sent peachy vibes for the smooth recovery
from my ear-bone surgery. I got back from Indiana last Sunday and have
been recuperating at home. My surgery lasted 7 hours, but it was
successful. The granuloma was removed. My recovery went quicker than
planned. I spent about 17 hours in Intensive Care and another 25 hours in
the hospital. I was released Thursday afternoon.
I am taking pain medication which keeps me weak and sleepy, but I'm feeling
no pain. I'm not allowed to drive for 3 weeks. I can't hear well out of
my left ear because my inner ear is full of blood, and the Drs say it will
take 4-6 weeks to get back to normal. This means I can't enjoy music,
which is a real drag.

Hey Ron and yawl!!!!
You can see the Fox from the Mariott Marquis in downtown which is also next
to the Hyatt Regency. These are significantly more expensive than the Daze

Also, some history of the Fox can be found by webbing your way there from

Now I don't mean to stir up a hornet's nest, but does anybody else think our
beloved ex slide guitar player with the ABB got slighted on the best of
release. I did some quick math on the ABB original compositions 1990-1994:
Dickey - song writing credits 65% of new songs
Gregg - 27%
Warren - 46%
Yet on Mycology, not counting Midnight Rider/Every Hungry Woman,
Betts - 63%
Gregg - 50%
Warren - 25%
I think there are least 3 tracks that one could argue should/could have been
included: True Gravity (Betts & Haynes), Kind of Bird (ditto), and of course
Soulshine.
Strictly a financial decision??
The EHW sounds ok at lower volumes, but pretty crackly when turned up loud.
I'm not complaining though, wish they'd release the whole set.

older bro Scott Sawyer on guitar. About half originals, & half covers,
including a beatles tune and a *smokin'* version of the Miles tune
'Solar'.
Also, the new Jazz is Dead cd is out, which I've heard is great. If only
the Brothers could could get in the studio... OK, thats all, looking
forward to Red Rocks.

Yo Peachheads: for those who are interested, the release date for Mycology
has been pushed back a week to next Tuesday. As well, it appears the release
of John Fogerty's Premonition VIDEO has also been delayed.
Say, there's supposed to be a video to go along with the new two-cd Skynyrd
live album (Lyve From Steel Town). Anybody seen it?
Finally, anybody who picks up the Spokane PBS station should know that the
Austin City Limits ABB repeat concert is being shown Sunday evening, 11 p.m.
Pacific time/midnight mountain time.

ABB Flashback: Dickey and "Pattern Disruptive"-1988

Hi,
Today's flashback goes to 1988 for a Washington Post article
that talks about Dickey and "Pattern Disruptive."
I am having my computer hardware and software changed this afternoon, so
depending on how that process goes, I may or may not be able to
post tomorrow. I'm hoping the computer gods are with me. :-)

THE BROTHERS WEREZ BETTER, YOU BETTS
By Eve Zibart
Friday, October 28, 1988 ; Page N23
DICKEY BETTS is beginning to sound like the Hamlet of Southern rock. To
boogie or not to boogie. He can't decided whether to appease or avenge
the ghost of Duane Allman, the king of slide; and he can't escape or
exorcise it, either.
Betts is unquestionably a fine axeman -- fluid, inventive and informed
by a wide range of blues and rock 'n' roll. But the style conceived by
brothers Duane and Gregg, back when they were playing knife-in-your-boot
bars on the wrong sides of Nashville and Jacksonville, was unique even
among their boogie-band disciples in that it wailed with the holy-roller
rhythm of the rural gospel choirs. And although Betts himself was
responsible for, among others, the beautiful "In Memory of Elizabeth
Reed," his new album "Pattern Disruptive" is a soulless combination of
trite lyrics and pointy-toed road band -- REO meets ZZ Top.
The hooks are cut to order ("I've been shaken, rattled, and now it's
time to roll"), all the women have a "Stone Cold Heart" and there are so
many riffs from Betts' glory days with the Allman Brothers Band (slide
guitarist Warren Haynes pairs him in just the old way, and percussionist
Butch Trucks is a "special guest") that the album becomes a kind of
guessing game. The best moments are the guitar breaks, of course, but
even they sound too familiar. If there weren't a track called "Duane's
Tune," a PR man would've invented it.
DICKEY BETTS - "Pattern Disruptive" (CBS 44289). Appearing Sunday at the
Bayou.

Just videotaped the VH1 Premonition show. Good show. I continue to be amazed
at how well Fogerty's voice has held up over the years in comparison to most
of his peers. Should we thank Saul Zaentz for that? Tunes from his new CD
sound good.

Hi Stu. I visited our library and talked them into giving me one of their
card catalogues. These things are now useless since everything is
catalogued on a computer, and the drawers hold about 20 tapes (they are
slightly wider than the tape but otherwise work fine). I know other
people on this list who have gotten these from their public libraries...

Oh, Pete. I had surgery last week for a melanoma on my leg, something
which has been there for a while but stupidly I did not have checked out
until last month. This was large, I have the stiches out this afternoon,
along with the followup report from the pathologist. Scared isn't the
right word, you know--it's panic and terror and everything else. We're
fortunate that doctors know how to treat all of these things much better
than they did even five years ago; I hope that all goes well for your
family. Best, Ray.

Till you can arrange that I have a good quality tape of Bela Fleck
and the Flecktones live in Atlanta last year where Otiel made a
guest appearance and the both of them were smokin'. I would gladly
run off 5 or so copies for folks, but be advised my tape is edited
down to the tunes that feature the bass most prominently.
The entire concert is great, and the audience is vocal, appreciative,
and responsive so if you want the entire concert experience on tape
a kind soul on this list supplied it to me originally and will probably
speak up. I edited it because I play bass, and while I recognize the
tremendous talent it takes to make a horn produce some of the sounds
it does in jazz, I just don't like squeaky horns, and life is too
short to change now.
BTW, I agree with an earlier assessment that Otiel tends to be more
melodic and Victor does more stacatto stuff. Its probably on the
instructional tape that was first mentioned but Victor does this
thing with the side of his thumb where he hits the string on the
way down, catches it again on the way up, then hits again or pops
with a finger or something. The end result is lightning fast machine
gun triplets that blow me away every time.
Keep the peach,
Dickey Dean Delker

OK, I'll play,
>>>what does everyone think will be....
a) first song played on summer tour?????
b) biggest surprise they pull out for summer tour?????????<<<
a) "Black Hearted Woman." With that really kickin' jam at the end a la
3/13/98. Just to WOW the crowd from the very start and establish that this
is an all-night train that CANNOT be slowed! (Plus it's always still light
at th sheds at 8:15, so it's important to GRAB those lawn-sitters
attention!)
b) "Les Brers." The surprise will be "Little Martha", played either as a
"Franklin's Tower" - type mellow jammin' intro to Les Brers or played in its
entirety as an interlude during the song by the entire band (a la 3/14/98).
Hey, a man can hope, can't he?
Oh, yeah, Fox, Red Rocks, yadda yadda...
I want to hear some onlist excitement from some more folks going to
Friday June 19 @ Great Woods (opening show of the summer tour! Sold out
yet? Wow!)
Saturday June 20 Saratoga Springs, NY Saratoga Performing Arts Center
(my bud gerry donnelley usually hits this every year -- Heiman, ya goin'?
You lucky --)
Sunday June 21 Hartford, CT
(Cool -- a double dip for y'all Bostonians, eh?) and
"Tuesday June 23 Cleveland, OH Nautica Stage
Wednesday June 24 Cleveland, OH Nautica Stage"
WOW!!! The two night run! Cleveland and its historically great taste in rock
and roll...
Just a little cheerleadin' afore I leave town for the weekend tonite (work
and in-laws); hope 'twas OK.

Yah, right, okay.
Well nevermind THAT mess, Pattern Disruptive is easily my second
favorite Dickey 'solo' effort (after Highway Call of course) and sounds
real good played loud. I wouldn't mind hearing the ABB trot out Lover
Man someday...
If ever there was an album which clearly pointed the way to what was to
come,
this is the one, with Warren, Johnny Neel and Matt Abts figuring
prominently.

now because I don't want to be negative, I'm all for their success, and I
have imposed a cooling-off period before I'm willing to talk about it :~)
(How's that, Jay? Your kind attitude and well-reasoned letter generated kind
feelings and restraint in turn, eh? I'm...learning...) in conjunction with
the nothing-in-it-for-them-but-some-extra-work TM cooperation with ABB
management on Fox tickets and Beacon tickets, PLUS a run of genuine rewards
for simply showing up on time to buy tickets and getting great seats at my
local TM outlet have led me once again to question the general TM bashing
hereabouts.
It's alot like hating Ma Bell in the 60's. TM doesn't set prices for shows,
like me and everyone else they charge for their services what the market
will bear, they're generally responsive to legit complaints, you have to be
a DISHONEST employee to scam the upfront seats, and the system, imperfect
though it is, is somewhat egalitarian in its distribution of tickets (a real
pain to "real fans of _____ [fill in the band]).
furthermore, at least here in Charlotte, I know as a FACT that TM has
generally been allied with the fans against some of the
heavy-handed,gestapo-like tactics of bothe the management of Blockbuster
Pavilion and the Charlotte-Meclklenburg Police Department. (Any of y'all at
the last couple Dead shows in charlotte remembr the helicopters, the mass
arrests, etc? The way THAT was shaking down on the INside was TM and the
Coliseum authority and the band management versus the cops and the City
Council.)
It's politically correct to bash TM if you're a music fan, of course. It's
also natural to assume when big blocks of good seats are held up or out of
the onsale (and often wind up in the hands of scalpers) that that's some
evil corporate TM scam. Aside from crooks like the guy in upstate NY,
generally speaking those are held out by the promoter and the band, and
often get distributed to, oh, maybe roadies, lower level management etc, as
comps, then those underpaid folk turn around and generate some off-the-books
income with 'em. (At least that's where the big money scalper types who have
BLOCKS of seats up frontand who I trust to tell me straight say hey get 'em.
Fascinating business...) (You sports people think of this analogy: how
college hoops coaches pay their second mortgage by seling their great final
4 seats to scalpers.)
So, if you want to blame someone for TM's near monopoly on ticket sales in
many parts of the country, I suggest you blame:
1) Capitalism.
2) The management of your local venues, PARTICULARLY those owned by the
city, county or state, for their "easiest is best" approach to ticket sales.
A mix of ticket agencies is a desirable thing, IMHO, and where the rubber
meets the road is where the contracts are signed and, more to the point,
where citizens DEMAND that their governments act in a manner that's socially
constructive, and not simply easy and expedient.
Just my .02 worth/attempt to raise the level of this NEVERENDING gripe above
"TM sucks." No offense to anyone whose opinion I may seem to disagree with
(happily, I think this would be a couple of the nicest people on this list.)

More info on the Fox:
Atlanta's Fox Theatre, originally the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque, was
designed in the late 1920's as headquarters for a 5,000-member Shriners
organization. It was a beautifully outlandish, opulent, grandiose monument
to the heady excesses of the pre-crash 1920's, a mosque-like structure
complete with minarets, onion domes, and an interior decor which was even
more lavish than its facade.
Entering the huge auditorium, an early reviewer for the Atlanta Journal
described "a picturesque and almost disturbing grandeur beyond
imagination." Visitors encountered an indoor Arabian courtyard with a sky
full of flickering stars and magically drifting clouds; a spectacular
striped canopy overhanging the balconies; stage curtains depicting mosques
and Moorish rules in hand-sewn sequins and rhinestones. The interior was a
masterpiece of trompe l'oeil: false beams, false balconies, false tents,
ornate grillwork hiding air conditioning and heating ducts. Virtually every
practical feature was disguised with artistic fantasy.
Detailing and furnishing were equally ornate. Nothing -no space, no
furniture, no harware- escaped the gilt, the tile, the geometric design.
Mens' and ladies' lounges, broom closets, telephone booths were all
emblazoned with intricate plaster, bronze and painted detail.
Yet for all this seeming excess, The Fox retained a subtlety of style and a
sense of tastefulness. As rich as it was in ornamentation, it never
appeared overstated.
The Fox stands today as a fiercly protected landmark and a nationally
acclaimed theater; having survived depression, mortgage forclosure,
bankruptcy, competition, television, real estate development, and above
all, age.

The song was not an Allman Brothers song, but it was on Gregg Allman's live
album in 1974. The song was "Are You Lonely For Me, Baby. I can't remember
the exact words, but it's something like "Last train from Jacksonville,
Gotta be on it, baby, I know you will." It's been 20 years or so since I've
heard it, but that's the song.

Brian,
Whoa! What a memory!! I just pulled that '74 LP, and You Are Absolutely
Correct, Sir! All I can say is that you must have avoided the, er, well, the
"excesses" of that era. Way to go!
Particulars: "The Gregg Allman Tour w/ his special guests COWBOY/Boyer &
Talton, and accompanied by a 24 Piece Orchestra," Capricorn # 2C0141 (1974).
"Are You Lonely For Me Baby," by Bert Berns, Web IV Music Co., BMI. Killer
gospel-style backing vocals by, most likely, Annie Sutton, Erin Dickins, and
Lynn Rubin (where are THEY now? Hmmm....)
I remember seeing this tour in Beantown, '73 or '74. Mostly, I remember
bitching about the huge rise in concert ticket prices: "$8.50????? That's
highway robbery!! Well, yeah, of course we're gonna go!" Deja vu, all over
again, indeed.
Good show, as I recall. The Music Hall or the Orpheum?

I thiink my main complaint with TM is not the service that they provide, they
certainly do a decent enough job, but the fact that there is NO competition.
I DO have a problem with buying a ticket....AT THE GATE...and still paying a
buttload of service and handling and bullcrap charges. And yes that is how I
would define those charges.
I got no beef with someone out to make a buck through legitimate means. But,
there is a certain amount of collusion that TM spreads around. When GDTS said
they were gonna sell their own tix, TM told venues that booking the Dead would
mean losing other acts. That can't be legal -- can it?
Lexus makes a good car. They charge a lot for it. If I can't afford or am
unwilling to pay that much for it, I can always go buy something from a
competitior. That's fair. But if the only car company out there was Lexus
(or Toyota, I guess would be more accurate), then yeah, I gotta problem with
that. It's the same thing with these electricities de-regulations going on.
People don't care that they might not save any money...they just seem to want
to pick on their own who they buy from. It was a big problem with the early
HMO's and they have responded by allowing patients to pick their own docs to a
certain extent.
Anyway....I ain't changing the world and neither is Ron and probably neither
are you...so I guess it doesn't really matter in the long run. : ) Just

wasn't the same. Of course, the snaps and pops weren't there...but the vinyl
seemed to have more volume. And by that, I mean more space...not louder.
GRC - Yup, the vinyl fills the room a lot better, while the CD sort of skulks
around in the speakers, without actually leaving them very much?
Not surprising really, when you consider what the original tape went through
to make to the CD - i.e. take original analogue tape, copy it onto digital tape,
passing through an analogue - digital convertor along the way which chops up
the original signal 40,000 times per second. Maybe another digital tape is
cloned from this one, in order to add index points, etc, or compile a
production master with any bonus tracks, etc, press up the CDs,
then it goes through another process of conversion within your home CD
player, this time a digital - analogue convertor wherein the 40,000 impulses
per second are re-constituted into something resembling the original signal.
In contrast, whatever losses & distortions occur in the analogue (vinyl)
chain, it's always an analogue signal, and undergoes no conversion along
the way, other than converting from magnetic impulses on tape to
magnetic impulses within the cutting head, etc. Unless of course, the
record company in its infinite wisdom has decided to cut the vinyl as
a 'digitally remastered' edition, i.e. from a digital tape.....

Jerry was the owner of Bass Tickets here in the Bay Area.
Bozz Skaggs, Etta James headlined. They showed some entertaining

to verbally incinerate 'poor' Jerry. Very enjoyable- all of a good humor of course.
Followed by a silent auction of nifty memorabelia, Dead [leather] jacket,

Etta didn't look very well and did a VERY short set, which disapointed me.

I dropped into my local book superstore today after work and saw a
terrific new tome called, `Unknown Legends Of Rock'. It would have
been worth it just for the *great* chapter on Arthur Lee and Love
(IMHO the most criminally underappreciated band in the history of
Rock) but the book also included sections on Sandy Denny and the
Hampton Grease Band. Duane loved the HGB so much he got Bill
Graham to book them at the Fillmore East with the Mothers. Rhino's
book division (!) has also thoughtfully reissued Brian Epstein's
auto-bio on the Beatles, `Cellarfull Of Noise'. There is also a
new book which chronicles every Pink Floyd gig. I could drop a
thousand just in the music section alone; I'm so proud that I
have willpower. :-)
Anyway, I wanted to mention that in the just-released Dead book,
`Tapers' Compendium', Gregg's vocals on 12/31/73 are referred to
as a `foppish, falsetto shriek'. I find this hilarious. Whoever
thought that up I'd like to buy a brew. I'm expecting this from
the `Shroom Express' shortly so I'll be able to experience Gregg's
`foppish falsetto shrieking' for myself.
Later! Daryl.

Howdy boys and girls,
Here's an update on openers for the Allman Brother Band this summer: The
opening act for the first leg of the summer tour is Robert Bradley's
Blackwater Surprise. Steve Earle will be running with the ABB from the 2nd
Great Woods show to Detroit, Milwaukee is "An Evening With ...", John
Hammond hitches up with the tour from Minneapolis through Red Rocks, and
Sister Hazel fills the opening slot from JAX to the end of the summer tour.
Sister Hazel was previously announced as coming along with the Brothers and
Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise to Charlotte, but that's changed. The
third band on that bill will be announced soon.
Just think ... The Summer of Peach & Love starts one week from tomorrow
mmmm mmmmm mmmmmm

Tinsley Ellis article (ref ABB & Tom Dowd)
Date:
Thu, 11 Jun 1998 15:05:51 -0700
From:
Greg
This article has references to ABB, Tom Dowd,Chuck Leavell which I
thought might be of interest to ABB fans.
>From the SJ Mercury News.
As blues gets hotter and
hotter, this guitarist keeps
rising
BY ALAN SCULLEY
Special to the Mercury News
TINSLEY Ellis is no newcomer to the blues-rock
scene. During the
past decade he's recorded five CDs as a solo
artist for Alligator
Records, the nation's leading independent blues
label. Before that he
led a band called the Heartfixers that recorded
two albums and
became one of the most popular blues-rock acts in
Atlanta and the
Southeast.
But Ellis, who opens a three-night run in the Bay
Area tonight at J.J.'s
in San Jose, found he still had a lot to learn
when he made his fifth
solo CD, ``Fire It Up,'' which was produced by
the legendary Tom
Dowd.
``He's like a professor or something,'' Ellis
says about Dowd, who in
his 50 years of producing has worked with legends
like Eric Clapton,
Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd
Skynyrd.
``I learned so much about what I should do and
shouldn't do,
musically and vocally, songwriting -- invaluable
experience,'' Ellis
says.
``One of the things I'd never thought about was
what keys to sing in,''
Ellis says, recalling an example of what Dowd
told him. `` `Don't sing
it in this key, please. Sing it closer to these
keys.' Or, `Here's your
highest note.' The old thing they used to do in
music school was
la-la-la-la, higher, higher and then they go `OK,
that's your highest
note.' Anything over that fails to be pleasing.
So things like that I've
really learned.''
The fact that Ellis was able to get Dowd to
produce, however, was
evidence that the Atlanta-based guitarist had
already been doing many
things right. And his songwriting, singing and
his considerable skills as
a guitarist have all improved with each of his
four previous solo CDs
-- ``Georgia Blue'' (1988), ``Fanning The
Flames'' (1989), ``Trouble
Time'' (1992) and ``Storm Warning'' (1994).
Worked with the best
But Ellis says Dowd not only produced his
best-sounding CD in
``Fire It Up,'' he got some of the best
performances Ellis had ever
committed to tape in a studio.
``First of all, just having him there gave me a
sense of confidence that
he even accepted the project,'' Ellis says. ``I
felt like . . . I'd taken a
step up, at least in the recording line of my
work. It's separate from
my touring, of course. And he had a certain way
of prefacing things
with, `I used to tell Eric (Clapton) to do this,'
or `I remember when
Duane (Allman) and Dicky (Betts) were working
this thing out,' or `I
sat on Ray Charles' piano bench and told him. . .
.'
``So he would preface things like that and all of
a sudden my ears
would perk up. Also, he knew when to coax me, to
praise me and he
knew when to turn on the heat, too. He really
kept me on my toes.''
``Fire It Up'' represented a considerable
departure in Ellis' usual
approach to making records. Instead of recording
live in the studio,
the songs were more carefully assembled with
plenty of overdubs
used to create a definitive performance. While
pleased with ``Fire It
Up,'' Ellis hesitated to call it his best effort
yet, especially compared to
``Storm Warning,'' a CD that earned him wide
press coverage.
``I still find myself putting on `Storm Warning'
when I want to hear
that real smoky blues sound,'' Ellis says. ``
`Storm Warning' was
totally a live album. A few of the vocals changed
and Chuck Leavell
(whose credits include the Rolling Stones and
Allman Brothers) came
in at the end and added a little bit of
keyboards. The new album is
more like a posed photograph. Everything is
gotten in place and you
spend a lot of time getting it there, whereas
`Storm Warning' was
more like sports photography. It captures a
moment.''
Ellis, 40, has also made an effort to refocus his
place within the music
scene. Though often touted as a bluesman, Ellis'
music has always had
a strong element of rock. ``Fired Up,'' in fact,
is arguably his most
rock-oriented effort to date. The image of Ellis
as a bluesman hasn't
always set well with blues purists, and as it
turns out, Ellis hasn't been
completely comfortable with that image, either.
``It's OK if you want to call me that, but I
don't want to call myself
that,'' Ellis says. ``It would be a little
precocious of me, especially with
people like John Lee Hooker and B.B. King and Dr.
John, who have
labored an entire life with this industry and
this genre, it would be hard
for me to just lump myself with them.
``And also, it would do them a little bit of a
disservice. If I can get up
on a soapbox for a second, it seems to me we
don't have any real
royalty in this country, no king or queen. Maybe
our royalty is our
roots performers like B.B. King, Doc Watson and
Ray Charles and
people like that. . . . Those are the people who
created blues, jazz,
folk. And for me to lump myself in with them --
hmmmm, I don't think
so. I think I'm going to just say that rock `n'
roll is my heritage, but
blues is my great love.
``When I first came to Alligator Records 10 years
ago, almost to this
day, and played Chicago for the first time, boy,
was I scared,'' Ellis
recalls. ``And it was people like (Alligator
recording artists) Lonnie
Brooks and his band and family and Koko Taylor
who really said,
`Tinsley Ellis is all right.' And they let me get
up and play with them.
Blues on the upswing
``So it's been kind of a long hard climb to the
middle.''
The careers of blues veterans and the recent
resurgence the genre has
enjoyed with the success of artists like Jonny
Lang (who covered an
Ellis song, ``A Quitter Never Wins'' on his hit
debut CD ``Lie To
Me'') and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, are very much on
Ellis' mind
during the interview.
He speaks excitedly about the first time he saw
B.B. King, as a
teenager growing up in the Miami area, and the
time he saw the late
Howlin' Wolf open for King a short time later.
Then his thoughts turn
to the meager existence most of the blues
pioneers led as they carved
out the style today's musicians play.
``It's just a drag that guys like Howlin' Wolf
and Muddy Waters --
again: our royalty -- are not able to enjoy the
fruits of the trees they
planted. . . . Because you've got people playing
blues now who are
teenagers, and they're riding around in tour
buses,'' Ellis says.
``Now when I saw Howlin' Wolf, they got out of a
station wagon.
This tour bus thing, this is a recent addition.
B.B King has had one for
a long time, with the amount of people he's been
hauling around. But
the whole new blues resurgence, Muddy Waters did
not last long
enough. Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins -- it's
too bad they weren't
able to cash in.''

Oteil's solo release

From:
Lana Michelizzi
Hi again ((treasured family)) ...
Oteil extends much love to you all and wants you to know that his first
solo album, "Love of a Lifetime" is coming out July 10 on his own label,
Nile Records. "Love of a Lifetime" will only be available through
www.nilerecords.com (there's a link to it in the Friends & Family section
of Hittin' the Web). $15.98 includes shipping and handling, Visa &
Mastercard are accepted, and it'll probably take 2 - 3 weeks to receive
after it's released.
Here's a peachy little treat just for you -- Oteil will personally
autograph cds for the first 100 members of the family who mention they read
about it here or on Hittin' the Web ... that is if you don't mind that
he'll have to break the shrink wrap to do it ;-)
Oteil & the Peacemakers include: Oteil/bass, Kofi Burbridge/keys & flute,
Marcus Williams/drums, Woody Williams/drums (but not at the same time as
Marcus), Mark Kimbrell/guitar, Regi Wooten (and he would be related to who?
hmmm, t,t,t ...)/guitar, and Kebbi Williams/sax.
"Love of a Lifetime" was recorded at the Cave studio in Atlanta April 22 -
28, and May 12 - 14 this year, though Oteil has had the songs written for a
long time. One track, "Church", was written ten years ago. ARU never picked
up on it, but Oteil always kept it in mind when he was thinking of doing a
solo album. I wondered if the reason the recording was done so quickly was
that studio space was expensive. Oteil's answer? "There was no reason to
take a real long time with it. The songs were written, we all got together
and my shit was done!" ;-)
There are ten songs on "Love of a Lifetime" (the title refers to Barri,
Oteil's wife) and each are dedicated to/inspired by someone different:
1. Bass Subterranea - for Larry Graham who invented the pop/slap style of
bass. Larry used to play with Sly & the Family Stone and is now touring
with TAFKAP.
2. Barri - with love to Barri *k*
3. Butter Biscuit - pays homage to James Brown & the Meters
4. Overcast - a tribute to Jaco
5. Ankh - dedicated to ancient Egypt
6. Listen Bart - to everyone who had anything to do with the making of the
movie Blazing Saddles ... and right here, right now, I promise a free,
autographed copy of "Love of a Lifetime" to the first brother or sister who
comes up with the reason "why".
7. Monk Funk - smiles on T. Monk
8. Church - is a musical celebration of Roger Lovett, the minister who
married Barri & Oteil, and keyboardist Clayton Ivey.
9. In There Out There - embraces Oteil's parents, William and Carol Burbridge.
10. Hymn to the Nile - gotta love the mother river ... and Egypt. Did you
know that there's an ankh cross on Oteil's Modulus bass?
The painting on the cover is one Barri had painted for Oteil one birthday
by an unknown artist in Egypt ... the original is on papyrus (sp?) paper.
The rest of the album art was done by Karen Noff.
Oteil & the Peacemakers aren't planning to tour in support of this album
(hmmmmm could he already be booked for the next few months?), but they are
planning a few album release parties this summer. We'll keep you posted in
the where & whens.
And now, off to see Jimmy Connors play tennis -- and you know I'll smile
when the score includes Love ...
Peach Bewitch You,
Lana

cranked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who else on the list is going? Lets try to
get together before the show. Try and get there early, like 6ish. Try to park
in the lot to the left of the gates. I'm going to fly a 13 star American flag
above my blue Nissan truck, we can rally 'round that for starters. That is
unless someone else has another plan I don't know about yet. Just think, we
get to see the opening and closing shows of the summer tour right here in our

Jesse, I have the album, I'll spin it for Jennifer, should I contact her
directly or do you want to arrange it?
Brian, I'm pretty sure it was the Orpheum, I remember taking pictures at that
show, although the're long gone.

what a shame that egos seem to have gotten in the way where song selection on
this album is concerned. I cant believe that "GAMBLERS ROLL" was not
included.
This song as much as any in the Warren/Woody era epitomized what the ABB
always stood for, nasty low down blues. What was the problem didnt Dickey
want to pay royalties to Warren for writing the song,I also find it hard to
believe that they couldnt have included "Loaded Dice" to thank Warren for his
vocal contribution to the band. Listen I appreciate Jack Oteil and the
current lineup but everyone out there knows that had it not been for the
contributions of Warren Haynes and Allen Woody I serious doubt if we would be
eagerly awaiting an ABB tour right now. Perhaps we would be seeing the GAB or
DBB in 200-300 people capacity bars. So for those true ABB fans I would like
to say for the last time thank you brothers Warren and Woody for helping to
resurect the sound and spirit that Duane had in mind in 1969 thank you for
your inspired efforts in helping to bring the music of the ABB back to the
forefront of american music and to brothers Jack and Oteil keep the fire
burning and know that your talents are appreciated and respected. Burn down
the house this summer. And of course thank you Jesus for brothers
Gregg,Dickey,Butch,Jamoe and Mark. I hope and suspect that it will be a great
summer. Sorry for the ramblin but what the hell its still america isnt it?

Well hell, I'm gonna be there! Getting psyched...get to see the opener, the
closer, and the middle too, so it'll be interesting to hear them and how
they change or don't over the course of the summer, etc. I really feel bad
for the West Coast folks...it's kind of like being a Bulls fan, you are
psyched that things go your way spectacularly, but on the other hand you feel
bad for everyone else...so while I can't do anything about it, know that I'd
gladly give up two of these shows to you West Coasters...that said, I'm pretty
psyched that they will be here!
Glenn...sounds like a plan for a pre-show...I'll try to be there but will
have to see about work schedules and other annoyances...

Hi all, sorry for the email, forgot something...
Just wanted to let all you Bostonians know that Sunday 6/21, if you're not
going to Hahtfahd to see the Brothers, head over to the Hatch shell on the
Esplanade. As part of the Marshall's/Boston Globe Jazz & Blues festival,
at 3pm a free concert starts with Sonny Rollins, Ronnie Earl & others (I
don't have it right in front of me). Should be fun...

I've got 2 real nice wood stacked cabinet assemblies from a company
called: Sorice~, PO Box 747, Nutley, NJ 07110 USA. They offer a real
nice collection of audio/video storage units which can be stacked and
combined to create different appearances for your unique requirements.
They are very handsom units in your choice of (3 shades of oak), teak
or cherry. You can choose between clear glass, smoked glass or solid
wood for doors. I suppose you could omit the doors if you want also.
They're a bit pricey, but they are attractive pieces of furniture that
would look good in almost any living space.
There is another company I have some literature on called: CAN-AM, 600
Main Street, Tonowanda, NY 14150-0888 USA or 70 Shields Court, Markham,
ON L3R 9T5, Canada. These are metal lateral file type racks in various
colors which look a bit more like office furniture, but do have higher
storage capacities. As they call it, "Serious storage for serious
collectors.
Hope this is helpful for those in need of storage.
